The Desert de les Palmes is a perfect destination for those looking to combine nature, history, and culture into a unique experience.

Located in the province of Castellón, near Benicassim, it is an enclave of great ecological, historical and scenic value, ideal for nature and hiking lovers.

History:

Although the lands of the Desert de les Palmes have been inhabited since the Neolithic period, its most significant history begins with the arrival of the Discalced Carmelite monks at the end of the 17th century. These monks sought solitary places for contemplation and prayer, calling this place a "desert" due to its isolation.

What to visit:

  • Carmelite Convent: Built in 1796, this monastery is a testament to the spiritual legacy of the Carmelites in the region.

  • Ruins of the old convent: Remains of the first Carmelite settlement, which offer a glimpse into the park's monastic past.

  • “La Bartola” Interpretation Center: Offers exhibitions on the history, flora and fauna of the park, ideal to start the visit.

  • Montornés Castle: A medieval fortress that dominates the landscape, accessible via hiking trails.

  • Natural springs: Such as the Font del Senyor and the Font de la Teula.

  • Hiking: recommended routes

The park offers various routes for all levels:

  • Bartolo Route : Ascent to the highest point in the park (729 m), with panoramic views of the coast and the interior.
  • Route of the Crests : A tour along the watershed, offering spectacular views and an intimate experience with the park's geology.
  • Bartolo and Les Santes Route : Combine the climb to Bartolo with a visit to the Les Santes hermitage, integrating nature and heritage.
  • Desert Springs Route : Circular route of approximately 7.8 km, with a gradient of 283 m, which runs through several natural springs in a wooded setting.
  • Benicàssim - Font Tallà Route: Moderate 5km route that starts from Benicàssim and ascends towards the park, ideal for a short excursion.

After a day exploring the Desert de les Palmes, return to Benicàssim to relax and, if you wish, enjoy a stroll along the seafront or a visit to the local beaches.
